Home energy-saving tips ahead of cold snap

With frigid temperatures approaching, Oklahoma Natural Gas is sharing practical energy-saving tips to help residents reduce energy usage and manage winter heating costs.

According to forecasts, a cold snap will bring daytime highs of 38°F on Saturday, 29°F on Sunday, and 27°F on Monday, with nighttime lows dipping to around 16°F each night. As these chilly conditions settle in, now is the perfect time to prepare your home for energy efficiency.

Here are some key recommendations to stay warm while saving energy:

  • Thermostat Settings: Keep your thermostat at 68°F to 70°F while awake and lower it when asleep or away from home.
  • Water Heater Temperature: Set your water heater to 120°F for optimal energy use.
  • Air Filters: Change or clean air filters regularly. Clean filters can lower energy consumption by 5% to 15%, while dirty filters increase costs and overwork equipment.
  • Seal Doors and Windows: Apply weatherstripping and caulk to seal any gaps or cracks around doors and windows.
  • Electrical Switches and Outlets: Install foam gaskets on electrical switches and outlets to minimize drafts.
  • Ceiling Fans: Switch your ceiling fan to a clockwise rotation during the winter months to push warm air downward.

As temperatures plummet, implementing these strategies can help keep your home comfortable and your heating bills under control.
