House fire displaces family of 11 on the east side

Updated at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20 — As family members go through what is left of their belongings following an early morning fire, a gofundme page has been established for a family of 11.

According to the page, Chris Bryan and his family lost everything. The family has nine children ranging in age from two to 14 year old.

“The family will need help getting back on their feet with utility deposits and a place to live. Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated,” sister of the victim said. “There was no insurance. Thank you.”

Original Story

A Guthrie home to nine children went up in smoke and flames early Sunday morning.

The Guthrie Fire Department was called out to a structure fire at 310 S. Elm at 8:51 a.m. A motorist saw smoke coming from the home and called 911.

As firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the attic of the two story home.

After forcing their way through the front door, firefighters located two adults sleeping in a bedroom on the first floor of the home. The man and woman, who were awaken by the firefighter, said they have nine children who sleep upstairs in four bedrooms, but that they were not home.

The family’s dog was also able to escape.

As fire crews battled the blaze from the inside and outside, the roof became fully-involved and was about to collapse. With firefighters inside, a firefighter sounded the fire engine’s horn to alert all firefighters to get out of the structure. Moments later, the roof fell in.

Woodcrest, Oak Cliff and Coyle fire departments assisted in the blaze, which took crews about 90 minutes to get under control, but spent several more hours on extinguishing hot spots.

The residence appears to be a total loss.

The American Red Cross was on site assisting fire crews and the family.

At the scene, investigators believe an electrical issue inside the home may have been what started the fire.

There were no reports of any injuries.
