The defending Class 5A state championship golf team from Guthrie High School will attempt to go back-to-back after winning the west regional championship on Monday.
The regional, played at Crimson Creek Golf Course in El Reno, format allows the top six teams and the top four individuals not on a qualifying team to advance to next week’s 5A state tournament.
Guthrie was paced on the first 18 holes of the day by a pair of even-par (72) from juniors Luke Morgan and Bo Robbins. Sophomore Brady Hirzel shot a 77, while Junior Luke Roach rounded out the scoring with an 80.
With a first-round team score of 301, the Jays enjoyed an 11-shot lead over Bishop McGuinness (312), a 22-shot cushion over Piedmont (323) and a 32-shot gap over Duncan (333).
As one round ended and the next immediately began, the stiff south breeze turned into a gusty north wind, the temperature dropped, and it began to drizzle. Despite that downturn in conditions, the Bluejays continued their strong play.
Morgan fired the only sub-par round of the regional by shooting one under to finish as the regional individual champion. Robbins managed a 76 to finish as the regional runner-up to Morgan.
Hirzel continued to be a steady force with a 77 and senior Luke Dale saved his finest performance of his high school golf career with a 75. Both golfers finished in the top 10.
McGuinness teammates Ethan Dawson and Cole Bardell finished third and fourth, respectively.
Guthrie’s team score of 600 was followed up by McGuinness (627), Piedmont (650) and Duncan (664).
El Reno and Noble rounds out the state tournament field from the west regional.
The state tournament format includes 36 holes on Monday, May 6 and 18 holes the following day at Lawton Country Club.
