Jelsma Stadium is expected to be a sell-out Friday night when the Guthrie BlueJays hit the gridiron with the Noble Bears for Homecoming 2010.
The Jays will enter the contest with a 4-1 record while Noble has struggled this season and have yet to pick up a win with an 0-4 record. The Jays are 2-0 in district play with wins over Deer Creek and Ada and Noble is 0-2 with losses to El Reno (27-7) and Western Heights last week (47-6).
Since 2001, Guthrie is 7-2 in Homecoming games, but one of those two losses came a year ago when El Reno shut-out the Jays 18-0.
As it is every season, homecoming can be a game of distractions with the week long events. A big distraction this season is Carl Albert and a district title game awaiting the Jays next week.
“It’s a catch game for us from the fact that we just came off all these big games in a row, its homecoming, and of course we know who is looming next week, which we have not talked about, but it concerns you,” Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins said.
Noble has just scored 27 points in four games this season. Although, the Bears have not been shut-out, the most points they have managed is seven points in a game. The Bears defense allows an average of 42 points a game.
The Bears will start a freshmen quarterback, one sophomore, three juniors, and six seniors on offense, that will center around option football and short passes out in the flats. Dakota Boxwell’s (5’11, 165) favorite target is senior wide receiver Dylan King (5’10, 140). The running game is controlled by seniors Tyler Teague (5’9, 190) and Michael Butts (5’8, 200).
“Noble is struggling a bit this year offensively,” head coach Rafe Watkins said. “They are going to play hard because they are the homecoming team.”
Noble will be working against Class 5A’s most stingy defense when it comes to stopping the run. Guthrie allows just an average of 64 yards per game. In the four Guthrie wins, the defense has allowed just 20 points total. The defense ranks second in the class with fewest points allowed at 11.
The Guthrie offense will work, once again, against a three-man front. Noble will try to stop the balance attack of the Jays. Guthrie quarterback Bryan Dutton is 415 yards away from becoming Guthrie’s all time passer in school history, and Kentrell Brothers is 5A’s top receiver when it comes to catches and yards.
