Richard Brothers hits Missouri’s football camp

Kentrell Brothers looks on with Missouri coaches at the Missouri football camp this week.

SPRINGFIELD– Missouri kicked off its camp circuit on Tuesday at JFK Stadium in Springfield, Mo. For the second straight year, an attendance record was set — the 2010 edition brought in 207 recruits, according to offensive coordinator Dave Yost. That number included prospects from Texas and Oklahoma, as well as the usual plethora of Show Me State stars.

LOOKING FOR GREEN: A notable absence from Tuesday’s camp was Springfield (MO) Hillcrest receiver Dorial Green. Green, who will easily be one of the nation’s top recruits for 2012, missed a few days of school last week because of the state track meet. On Tuesday, Hillcrest’s penultimate day of school in the 2009-2010 year, Green had to stay late to make up missed work.

Also missing was Green’s younger brother, 2013 recruit Darnell Green. The younger Green could also be a highly sought-after recruit when his time comes, but he broke his thumb playing basketball last week.

Richard Brothers impressed during receiving drills on Tuesday.

BROTHERS BRINGS BROTHER: Guthrie (OK) linebacker Kentrell Brothers made the trip to Columbia with his younger brother, Richard Brothers. While the older Brothers spent most of his abbreviated workout (he arrived late) talking to Missouri coaches, Richard Brothers showed that he may be a top recruit when his time rolls around. The 2013 prospect plays wide receiver and defensive end for Guthrie — like Kentrell. At 6-foot-3, 190-pounds, Richard looks like he could end up as a wide receiver, and showed good agility and hands during the pass catching drills.

We’ll have a video interview with Kentrell later this week.

FRONT OF THE LINE: Offensive linemen ruled the day on Tuesday, especially out-of-state linemen. 2011 offensive tackle Laquan McGowan made the long trip from Amarillo, Texas, and jaws dropped when he walked into the stadium. According to one Missouri assistant, McGowan measured in at 6-foot-6 and over 350-pounds. The Tigers are looking at McGowan as an offensive linemen, and despite that huge frame, he managed to run in the high 5.5-second range for his 40-yard dash.

Duncan (OK) OG/C Dylan Laurens also made the trip, intent to “turn the verbal (offer) into an official one.” Laurens said Missouri coach Josh Henson wanted to see him work out in person before the Tigers offered. Laurens holds his weight well, and was one of the most impressive linemen in Springfield on Tuesday. Like Brothers, we’ll have a video interview with Laurens up later this week.

McGowan's stature turned heads on Tuesday.

Two other under-the-radar linemen were constantly at the hips of Missouri’s coaches. Kyle Osborne, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound OT, and Garrett Stafford, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound OT, both made the trip from Oklahoma at the behest of Missouri’s coaches. Osborne is actually from Henson’s hometown of Tuttle, a fact that wasn’t lost on the Tiger coach. Stafford, from Tulsa, is hearing from a few schools, but both don’t have offers yet. Those two, along with Laurens, were the most impressive linemen on Tuesday.

SPEED DEMON: Webb City (MO) athlete Maddy Johnson was unofficially the fastest recruit in town on Tuesday. During Johnson’s first run, three coaches who were timing said they had the wrong time. When all three realized they had 4.43 on their stop watches, jaws dropped. Johnson ran again, but stumbled midway through. He still managed a 4.57.

Johnson, a 5-foot-7, 147-pound athlete, might not have the size to be a FBS recruit. But, boy, the dude can burn. One of our newest interns, Sean Leahy, caught up with Johnson and will have a full story soon.

WHAT’S NEXT? Plenty still on tap for Missouri’s recruiting camps. The first session of the Tigers’ high school team camps begins on Thursday, where 2012 quarterback Gunner Kiel is making the trip from Indiana with his high school team. Missouri hosts another one-day camp in St. Louis on Sunday, June 6, and in Kansas City on Tuesday, June 8. The camp circuit wraps up with the second session of team camp, which begins on June 10.
