Guthrie (Okla.) linebacker Kentrell Brothers has for now narrowed down his list of suitors to a couple of Pac-10 schools. Brothers will be heading to the University of Washington in a few days, and he talked to Devils Digest about his visit to Tempe this past weekend.
“The visit went pretty good,” Kentrell Brothers said. “I hung out with all the linebackers on the team, Brandon (Magee), Shelley (Lyons) and Tez (Vontaze Burfict). They showed me a really good time. They treated my mom well, my grandparents well. It was a good visit. It was 104 degrees but it’s humid in Oklahoma so if felt like 90 to me. The weather really wasn’t bad like people say it is.
“The coaches were amazing. I wasn’t the only player on an official visit, but they paid a lot of attention to me and my family. They sat with us when we ate, they were good people overall.”
Brothers mentioned in a previous interview how much he values education and how this will be the number one factor influencing his decision regarding which university he will attend. The linebacker’s mother really took the most to this aspect of their Tempe trip.
“The academic presentation they gave us really impressed her,” Brothers said.
Witnessing a defensive domination during the 54-9 ASU win over Portland State naturally caught Brothers’ eye and gave him a personal perspective on the Sun Devils’ defense.
“I really like how coach (Trent) Bray brings a lot of pressure with the quarterbacks.” Brothers said, “and how those players are flying around on the field. They really do a good job.”
Brothers acknowledged that his interest level in the Sun Devils, which wasn’t low to begin with, is higher now following this Tempe trip.
“This visit was better than the last one I took (unofficially in the summer),” Brothers explained. “Now that I got to see everything about the school I got to see what I really liked about the school and didn’t like about the school and there really wasn’t much I didn’t like about the school.
“The school looks more attractive to me now.”
The 6-1 215 Guthrie star plays on both sides of the ball, and as a junior he earned second team All-State honors with 95 tackles, 17 sacks, four interceptions, and a fumble recovery. On offense he had 62 catches for 1,122 yards and 12 touchdowns. He benches 250 lbs. and is being recruited as a WILL linebacker by ASU.
“Coach Bray likes how I play in space,” Brothers stated. “I’ll play wherever the coaches think I should be playing at. If I needed to learn a new position I think I would pick it up pretty fast. So if they want me to play inside or outside I’ll just work on perfecting that.”
Brothers will officially visit Washington on September 10th (he also visited Seattle unofficially), and while he does expect right now to take all five visits, he doesn’t know which three remaining schools he will trip to.
Other schools that have offered him are Arizona, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Tulsa, Baylor, Connecticut, Duke, Syracuse and Vanderbilt.
“I would like to make a decision right after that (Washington) visit,” Brothers remarked. “But if I can’t do that I’ll just take more time.”
