Much like last week, Guthrie was a big favorite over the Southeast Spartans, Friday night at C.B. Speegle Stadium, and just like last week made their statement early.
Guthrie finishes the regular season with a seven game winning streak after a 48-13 win over Southeast. The Jays improve to 9-1 and finish perfect in district 5A-1 at 7-0. The Spartans end their season with a 3-7 record.
Head Coach Rafe Watkins and the Jays will host the Durant Lions in the first round of the playoffs inside Jelsma Stadium, Friday night. The Lions took care of Capitol Hill, 48-30, on Senior Night to secure their playoff berth.
For the fourth consecutive week, the Guthrie defense held their opponent to less than 100-yards of offense with Southeast managing 88 total. The Spartans did earned 72 rushing yards and marks the most rushing yards allowed by the Jays since week three.
The Spartans scored 13 points for the third highest point output against the Jays behind Enid (37) and Carl Albert (14).
The Guthrie offense left off where they did last week, at Western Heights, by scoring on each possession in the first half and enjoyed a 41-6 halftime lead.
The offense started quickly with a 7-play drive capped off with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Dutton to Kentrell Brothers. Brothers finished his night with seven-catches for 141-yards.
The passing score pushed Dutton past Keaton Callins for the all-time touchdown passes thrown by a Guthrie quarterback. Dutton finished the night by completing 11-of-11 passing with three touchdown scores and 275-yards passing while adding 51 rushing yards for 326 all-purpose yards. Dutton was named the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game. He now has 50 career touchdown passes, including 24 this season.
Senior running back Derrik Kelly gave his team a 14-0 lead after a 3-yard run with 4:30 left in the opening quarter. Kelly finished with 108 rushing yards on just seven carries and ended the night with three touchdown scores and six point after attempts.
Senior wide out Devante McCully found the end zone twice with 61 and 58-yard touchdown scores. The 6’6 McCully slipped a tackle and simply out ran the Spartans secondary for his first score.
Fellow senior Tim Zupo scored on a 3-yard run for his first score of the season.
With a running clock in the second half, the final two quarters took exactly 24 minutes to play.
The Guthrie and Durant first round playoff game will be a rematch from the 2008 and 2009 seasons. The Jays won both games, including the 2008 Homecoming game, in Jelsma, 41-15.
