Kevin Blue leads Guthrie’s ground game in Piedmont

Guthrie senior running back, and now turned defensive back, Kevin Blue has endured more than a student-athlete should ever have to take on. On Friday, he dedicated his performance on the field to his late mother and offensive line following a win in Piedmont.

Piedmont scored on a 79-yard touchdown reception from Hunter Chism less than two minutes into the game. However, from that point, the Jays scored 28 unanswered points for the 28-6 win.

Guthrie improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in district play while Piedmont falls to 0-5 and 0-2. McGuinness and Carl Albert remain perfect at 2-0 inside the district and Deer Creek falls to 1-1 in district 5A-2.

Piedmont managed a total of 125 yards for the remainder of the game following their opening drive score. Guthrie’s defense held Piedmont to minus 36 yards rushing on 19 attempts.

The Jays offense was highlighted by Blue’s career high 104 yards rushing and was rewarded with his first touchdown of the season. He added two catches for 29 yards and was inserted into head coach Kelly Beeby’s defense and was credited with eight tackles.

“I dedicate this game to my mom and offensive line,” Blue said in his radio post game interview. Blue’s mother was tragically killed on July 4th in a motorcycle accident.

“Ever since it happened I have surrounded myself around some great people in my life. I appreciate it guys,” Blue said as his voice began to shake.

Senior quarterback Zane Maltz continued to benefit the Jays offense by passing for 108 yards and added 81 yards on 23 carries. Maltz found the end zone three times with runs of 4 yards and twice on 1-yard scores.

Special teams were also special as Brady Benjamin was a perfect 4-4 on point after attempts and the Jays tipped the Wildcat’s extra point and later blocked a field goal.

The Bluejays will now point their direction to the Guymon Tigers, who lost to Carl Albert (57-25) and is 3-2 on the season. The week six game will serve as the Homecoming game for Guthrie.
