Musil and Jenkins headed to the 5A State Tournament

The Guthrie High School wrestling team qualified two for the upcoming state wrestling tournament in Oklahoma City. Both qualifiers will be making their state tournament debuts as sophomores.

Tyler Musil and Dane Jenkins will walk into the State Fairgrounds on Friday morning as No. 4 seeds seeking first round upsets against No. 1 seeds.

Musil enters the two-day event with an 18-15 record while Jenkins is 17-11 overall. Musil will challenge Glenpool’s Garrett Wild, who is 36-4 on the season. Jenkins will challenge Pryor’s Stevon Crogan (28-13).

2016 5A State Wrestling Tournament

Jenkins rallied in the 5A west regional at Western Heights after dropping his opening match to Altus’ Taven Birdow (fall), who won a state championship in 2014. Jenkins won three straight matches to earn his bid to the tournament in the 220 pound division.

Jenkins, a defensive stand-out on the gridiron, won by fall over Jordan Ramirez of Southeast and followed that up with a 7-4 decision over Lawton Mac’s Brandon Lawton. In the winner moves on to state match, Jenkins took the win, 5-3, over Piedmont’s Will Heindeslman.

In the third place match, Cesar Castanon battled Jenkins to a 5-1 decision on his home mat to claim the third place prize.

Musil, wrestling at 120 pounds, started the regional with a first round bye and in his first match was pinned by Lawton Mac’s Quinton Smith. Musil took advantage of a bye and in the third round of the consolation defeated Woodward’s Applebee by fall to set up a do-or-die match for state, but received an injury default from Southeast’s Rodolfo Macias to secure his chance at state.

In the third place match, Musil suffered a 9-4 setback to Shawnee’s Nick Poncho.

Just missing out on the final tournament of the year was Alex Fields (106), Adam Baker (113) and Nathan Finto (152) whom all finished fifth place. Complete results following photo gallery.
