Every day in Oklahoma classrooms, students are gaining the skills to build brighter futures, thanks to programs like CareerTech.
This February, Governor Kevin Stitt has officially proclaimed it Career and Technical Education Month, recognizing the essential role CareerTech plays in preparing students for high-demand careers and driving Oklahoma’s workforce forward.
For nearly 50 years, Meridian Technology Center has been at the forefront of this mission, empowering students since 1974. With hands-on training and real-world experience, Meridian’s programs connect education to opportunity.
“CareerTech isn’t just about technical skills; it’s about creating opportunities that change lives,” said Dr. Douglas Major, Superintendent/CEO of Meridian Technology Center. “From high school students discovering their passions to adults retraining for new careers, CareerTech programs strengthen our communities and fuel Oklahoma’s economy.”
In fiscal year 2024, the Oklahoma CareerTech system served 520,733 learners. Statewide, more than 44 percent of high school students enrolled in at least one CareerTech class—opening doors to careers in fields like healthcare, welding and technology.
Through partnerships with local businesses and educational institutions, CareerTech equips students with industry-relevant skills and provides employers with a skilled workforce to meet growing demands. At Meridian, students are graduating ready to lead and succeed in their chosen fields.
“As both a superintendent and a CTE educator, I’ve seen firsthand how CareerTech transforms lives,” said Dr. Major. “It’s not just about jobs; it’s about building stronger families, communities, and a better future for Oklahoma.”
Innovating for the Future
CareerTech continues to innovate with new training opportunities that keep pace with evolving industry needs. From cutting-edge facilities to state-of-the-art technology, Meridian Technology Center is investing in the future of education and workforce development.
“Our programs are reaching more students and adult learners than ever before, providing them
with the skills they need to thrive in high-demand industries,” said CareerTech State Director Brent Haken. “We’ve launched new and innovative training opportunities, ensuring our offerings remain aligned with the needs of employers and the future workforce. And we’ve secured additional resources to enhance facilities, invest in cutting-edge technology and support our mission to grow Oklahoma’s economy.”
