OSU Extension Center: Gingerbread house competition

Like most Christmas traditions, gingerbread houses make us think of Christmas and sitting around the kitchen table with the kids creating these great works of art. According to Wilton, a popular confectionery-making company, over two million gingerbread house kits are sold each year.

For you more DIY-inclined, domestic gurus you can find books and recipe sites offering up recipes and plans for making your own sugary domicile. However, did you know this holiday tradition is possibly rooted in the folktale Hansel and Gretel.

Gingerbread houses date back to the 1600s, a few centuries after the emergence of gingerbread itself, writes food historian Tori Avey. The tale of Hansel and Gretel may be even date older than that time period.

You are invited to share your talents in the Christmas tradition of constructing a Gingerbread House for the holidays. Join the OSU Extension Center, 4-H and Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) members for the Gingerbread House Contest and Display.
