Overtime needed again for Guthrie win

Bookmark and Share

For the second time this week the Guthrie boys basketball team needed overtime. However, both overtimes ended in much-needed wins.

On the third and final day of the 51st McGuinness Classic, the Jays got their first win against Yukon, a team that beat them just 11 days previous in the Ardmore Holiday Festival Tournament, 49-47. Guthrie improves to 5-4 with the win in the seventh place game.

All four losses this season have come from 6A schools and are now 1-4 against the larger classification.

Guthrie, who suffered back-to-back losses to Norman North and Edmond North in the two previous days, jumped out to an 8-5 first quarter lead over the ninth ranked Millers, but could not hold on to the lead and trailed 18-13 at the break.

The Millers added to their lead by outscoring Guthrie 12-10 in the third, but the Jays offense came alive in the fourth quarter. The Jays erupted for 21 points after scoring 23 points in the first three-quarters combine.

The Jays were paced by senior Kentrell Brothers, junior Codee Gross, and freshmen Kai Callins with 11 points each.

Eventually, it was the Jays holding off in overtime to claim the win. Guthrie is now 2-0 in overtime games this season, but are just 2-4 in tough, competitive tournaments.
