Piedmont secures playoff spot with win; Jays still searching

Penalties and turnovers never come at the right time, but both played a major role Thursday night in Piedmont for the Guthrie Bluejays. For the first time in school history, the Wildcats claimed victory over the Jays.

With the 22-14 win, Piedmont (6-2) joins McGuinness and Carl Albert in securing a playoff berth in District 5A-2. Piedmont and McGuinness hold 5-0 district records and Carl Albert at 4-1.

Piedmont will play their first ever playoff game in Class 5A since joining in 2014. The win secures their first winning season since 2011.

Guthrie falls to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the district. The Jays appear they will battle with Woodward for the fourth and final playoff position. The Boomers come to Jelsma Stadium on Friday and Guymon the following week.

Each team combined for three turnovers in the first half. Piedmont did not commit any turnovers in the second half, but Jays committed three more to finish with six on the evening.

Following a Piedmont muffed punt, Guthrie scored the game’s first score with a two-yard touchdown run by senior Ty Doolin midway through the opening quarter.

Piedmont got on the board on the first play of the second quarter with a 38-yard pass. The extra point was blocked by Troy Branson and the Jays held a 7-6 lead.

Guthrie increased their lead up to 14-6 after Jackson Waddell hit Cal Davis with a four-yard passing score to give the Jays the halftime lead. However, it would be their final score of the night.

Piedmont scored 16 unanswered points with three scores in the second half, including a 20-yard field goal for their first lead at the 11:10 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Jays finished with 13 penalties for 114 yards, which two penalties on Piedmont’s final scoring drive extended the drive and led to the score.

Guthrie finished with less than 100 yards of total offense.

Guthrie held an all-time 6-0 series lead until Thursday.

With two games left in the regular season, the Bluejays are looking to extend two streaks. A 16-year winning season record and 11 consecutive playoff trips.
