Remains found identified as murder suspect

The medical examiner’s office has made a positive identification of skeletal remains that were found in Blaine County. The remains were identified as a murder suspect.

A farmer found a human skull on his property on June 13. The remains were identified as 23-year-old Christopher Blake Scruggs, of Guthrie.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations, Scruggs was a suspect in the homicide of 18-year-old Caylee Massey, who was shot in the head near Canton.

On October 15, Massey was riding in a truck with another individual as they were driving from Canton to Oklahoma City. The driver of the truck pulled to the side of the road and along with Scruggs, a passenger in the truck, fled the scene, according to the OSBI.

OSBI agents and local authorities had been searching for Scruggs, naming him a person of interest. Evidence collected inside the truck and information from numerous interviews indicated Scruggs murdered Massey. Related story: Man wanted in Logan County now wanted for murder in Blaine County

Scruggs was also wanted by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. Scruggs is believed to have been a part of assaulting a person by striking the victim in the head repeatedly with a handgun on Oct. 14, according to court documents. The victim suffered a fractured skull during the assault.

On June 11, a Facebook page was created in the memory of Scruggs named “In Loving Memory of Christopher Blake Scruggs.” At the time of the creation of the page, OSBI officials told Guthrie News Page a positive identification had not been made, but the family believed the remains were those of Scruggs.

Although a family member says Scruggs was shot, the medical examiner says it could take several months to determine a cause of death.

OSBI special agents continue to investigate Massey’s murder.
