School board member resigns post effective immediately

A Guthrie school board member held back tears during Monday night’s meeting as she announced her resignation from the Board of Education (BOE) effective immediately.

Gail Davis made the announcement following an executive session.

In a prepared statement, Davis read, “Tonight will be my final school board meeting. I am resigning my position because of a state law designed to limit nepotism. My new daughter-in-law, Ally Davis, is teaching fourth grade at GUES.

Davis, who served Ward 6, joined the BOE in January 2012 after Colette Datin resigned her post, ironically, so that her daughter could teach in the school district.

In 2013, Davis was elected to the school board after running unopposed. Her term was set to expire in early 2017.

gail-davisSuperintendent Dr. Mike Simpson says the board will likely not fill the position due to the upcoming February election, which will fill the vacant seat.

“It has been an honor to serve on this board for the past four and a half years,” Davis said.

“I have learned a tremendous amount and look forward to the future of Guthrie Public Schools because I believe we have outstanding, caring teachers, a great administration and that we have just begun to making real positive progress.”
