Known for dishing out hugs, Guthrie cross country coach James Strahorn gave his final hugs to his runners on Friday morning as he announced he is leaving the program.
In a message to student-athletes and runners on Thursday, Strahorn said the decision did not come easy.
“I can’t express how grateful I am for what we have experienced together. This was the hardest decision I’ve ever made.” He continued, “I am who I am because of the love and support we have all shown each other, and I’ll never forget all the memories we shared. Guthrie will forever be in my heart.”
Strahorn, a math teacher at the high school and a track assistant coach, helped lead the boys and girls cross country programs to the state meet in the past two seasons, including a 5A girl’s state runner-up finish in 2018.
Strahorn, the definition of a runner’s coach, said he has accepted a teaching and coaching position at Edmond Memorial and will be an assistant coach at the 6A school.
The first meet of the season will be August 24 in Hennessy.
