Suicidal suspect threatens harm at Guthrie High School; suspect in protective custody

For the second time this week, law enforcement increased their presence at Guthrie High School. On Thursday, a person was taken into protective custody after allegedly making a threat to do harm to students and staff.

At approximately 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, a threat of a school shooting was reported to a Guthrie Police Department School Resource Officer. The suspect made the threat via a messaging application.

According to police, the suspect stated that he was suicidal and was going to the high school with a gun to shoot and do harm. The police department responded immediately by assigning four additional units to the school as Logan County Deputies responded to the suspect’s residence.

The suspect was located at his residence and detained until Guthrie police officers arrived on scene. After a preliminary investigation, the suspect was taken into protective custody and transported to a medical facility for mental evaluation.

The high school did not have to be placed in lock down status due to the immediate response.

Officials say the suspect is not a student in the Guthrie school district and at no time were any students in danger.

The suspect’s information was not released, but may be revealed after the investigation has been completed and charges are submitted to the Logan County District Attorney’s Office.

“Once again, this proves the value of students speaking out and telling adults about potential threats,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said.

“I think this also shows the value of the School Resource Officer program and the cooperation that our school district enjoys with both the Guthrie Police Department and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.  Together, this team should assure students, parents and the rest of the community that our schools are a safe place for their children,” Simpson concluded.

Just last week, police and deputies investigated a threat made by a student with Guthrie schools. On Feb. 23 school officials were notified of a potential threat derived from comments by a student at the high school. Both law enforcement agencies concluded that the comments were taken out of context and no threat to student safety existed. Extra security was put into place.
