It appeared as if the Lady Jays basketball team was headed to back-to-back wins and a tournament finals, but a third quarter nightmare erased those thoughts.
Guthrie led the tournament host, Duncan Demons, 30-23 at the break, but the Lady Demons erupted for 17 third quarter points while holding the Lady Jays to just 2-points in the Duncan Chisholm Trail Holiday Shoot Out semifinal game.
Duncan held on for a 53-48 win to advance to the championship game against Norman North. Guthrie and Tahlequah will battle in the third place game beginning at 4:00.
In the decisive third quarter, Duncan hit 6-of-8 free throws while Guthrie never found the foul line. Overall, Guthrie was 6-11 from the charity line while Duncan finished 11-15.
Junior Melinda Murillo led Guthrie in the scoring column with 14 points, but got a sparked from freshmen guard Kamber Smedley and her 13 points. Mikaela Murillo chipped in with 9 and Gracynn Smith finished with seven.
