Updated on Tuesday, December 4 — Update: Fatal apartment fire claims 14 year old
One person died late Monday evening and others are without a home following an apartment fire on Guthrie’s east side.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the Woodpark Apartments, located at 1809 E. College Ave., at 10:53 p.m. Guthrie police officers were first on the scene and reported the eight unit apartment complex to be fully-involved with flames and smoke.
Residents could be seen frantically escaping from the two-story building.
Firefighters on scene were advised that a 14-year-old was believed missing.
As officers approached an upstairs apartment, the flames had over taken the front door. Officers instructed the family to the back of the apartment, break a bedroom window and jump from the second floor. Two females jumped into the arms of the officer down below.
However, one person was unable to escape and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Medical Examiner’s Office arrived just before 4 a.m.
“I think we have the best PD (police department),” Irfan Rama said on a Guthrie News Page Facebook post. “(One officer) was out of breath from (the) smoke trying to go inside in the building looking for survivors. I don’t know how to thank them enough – words won’t be enough.”
Deputies with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office retrieved blankets for dozens of residents as they stood outside in the below freezing temperatures.
The American Red Cross was immediately requested and began helping families with their immediate needs.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
EMSA and LifeNet ambulance services helped at the scene along with other medical calls throughout the county while Guthrie firefighters handled the fire.
There were no immediate details given at the scene on the deceased or how the fire started.
