Construction workers began tearing down the viaduct bridge this week. The 81-year-old landmark bridge is being torn down for a new four-lane bridge.
The crews started demolishing the east side of the bridge on Wednesday. The bridge was shut down to traffic in December.
The Department of Transportation says the public is reminded that there is no pedestrian access to the old bridge during its deconstruction.
“This is an active construction zone that changes daily and members of the public, including pedestrians, are strongly advised to observe all construction signs and barricades for their own safety,” an ODOT spokesperson said.
The original State Highway 33 bridge is being carefully deconstructed to allow the structural beams to be reused by Logan County on local bridge projects.
The $17.2 million contract to reconstruct and widen the SH-33 bridge to four lanes was awarded to Manhattan Road and Bridge Co. of Tulsa. Work began in early 2017 and continues through late 2018.
