The Guthrie Special Jays were once again celebrated by the community Wednesday morning as they departed for the Special Olympics in Stillwater.
Students, administrators, community members, cheerleaders, and the Guthrie High School band gathered outside the school cafeteria to cheer on the athletes before their trip.
The Olympians entered to the Guthrie fight song while the crowd waved, clapped, and offered words of encouragement and good luck.
Following a group photo, the athletes boarded their bus and received a police escort from the Guthrie Police Department along with members of the Territorial Riders.
The send-off continued through other Guthrie school sites on the way out of town. Students at Fogarty Elementary lined the outside of the building to wave and cheer for the athletes as they passed by on their way to Stillwater.
The annual tradition continues to highlight the community’s support and pride for the Guthrie Special Jays and their participation in the Special Olympics.
