Woman, child escape bullets and abuse; $250,000 bond set

A Guthrie man remains behind bars Monday afternoon and is facing several charges. The man is believed to have physically abused a four-year-old and the child’s mother. He’s accused of punching and throwing the child and mother along with several other serious actions.

On August 6, just before 8 p.m., the Logan County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a domestic battery that had occurred in the 1600 block of South Western Avenue in central Logan County.

When deputies arrived to the home, a friend of the family was seen leaving the residence and stated a male subject was threatening suicide with a rifle. A deputy was able to call the subject out of the residence and was taken into investigative detention without incident.

As the events at the home were unfolding, the victims of the domestic battery were transported to the sheriff’s office.

During interviews, the female victim stated Jonathan Lee Goodman, 30, became angry with the four-year-old, who was crying because of constipation issues, as Goodman was trying to rest after work.

According to court papers, the adult female victim made the child go outside and play to separate the two. However, the child came back inside the home and that is when Goodman is believed to have grabbed and threw the child across the room striking the child’s head against a wall. Afterwards, he made both victims go to a bedroom as he began smashing appliances and walls with a large pipe wrench.

The loud actions of Goodman reportedly scared the child who began to cry again. Goodman came into the bedroom and began to choke the child. The mother, attempting to protect her child, was then grabbed by the throat and choked. After pleading to let her go, Goodman released the choke hold, and again threw the child across the room by the child’s hair. The child stood up and was struck in the face by Goodman’s hand and knocking her back to the ground.

A forensic interview of the four-year-old is consistent with the statements made by the adult female in the residence.

The affidavit goes on to say Goodman did not allow the two victims to leave the home. From there, it is said Goodman demanded the female adult to go get his gun from his vehicle. The woman told authorities she did not want to leave the child alone with Goodman inside the home, but that Goodman threaten the child more harm if she did not retrieve the rifle. As she attempted to get the gun she could hear the child screaming and rushed back into the home. Once inside the home, Goodman is said to have thrown the pipe wrench and a small sword at the adult female.

Again, Goodman demanded the adult female to retrieve the gun and stated he threaten to kill both of them. She quickly grabbed the gun and then says Goodman shot the gun at her twice. Luckily, no one was hit by the bullets, and the two victims were able to escape the home.

Investigators with Sheriff’s Office, assisted by agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, served a search warrant on the residence, and collected evidence that was consistent with the statement of the adult female from the residence.

Chief Deputy Richard Stephens says a referral to the Department of Human Services has been made, and they are completing an investigation into the incident.

Following a search warrant, several items were recovered, including a .22 caliber shell, a black rifle with the chamber loaded, a ten round magazine,  a large red wrench, and a small sword. The home was described to be cluttered with several items strewn across the floor and damaged by what appear to be a heavy object.

Goodman admitted to the argument and to holding and shooting the rifle at a dog. When asked if he shot inside the residence, Goodman asked for his attorney.

Goodman was arrested and is facing a total of six charges, including child abuse, domestic strangulation, assault with a dangerous weapon and kidnapping.

Goodman was arraigned on Aug. 8, and was bound over and held on a bail of $250,000. He is scheduled to be back in court on Aug. 28 at 9 a.m.
