Wood stove causes house fire; two puppies killed

Logan County fire departments responded early Wednesday morning to a house fire just outside of the Guthrie city limits. The fire has left a family without a home and two puppies dead.

Firefighters responded to 1601 N. Midwest Blvd. for a single structure just before 1 a.m.

People inside the home were able to call 911 before escaping the burning structure.

As firefighters arrived, smoke and flames could be seen from the back of the home. The fire spread up into the attic and eventually through the roof.

Officials say a son had started a fire in their wood burning stove to keep the puppies warm.

Firefighters from Guthrie, Woodcrest, Sooner and Coyle needed about 60 minutes to gain control of the fire, but remained on the scene until 4:40 a.m.

The structure gave firefighters a challenge as the fire was between two ceilings in the home. The home had been remodeled a few times.

Along with the fire department’s, OG&E and Logan County Red Cross were dispatched for assistance.

The home appeared to be a total loss.
