Baseball collects 20th win of the season

Last season it took 29 games and this season it took 28 games to reach 20 wins for the Guthrie BlueJay baseball team.

Just like last season, the 20th win came in the Deer Creek tournament this season with a 5-0 win over 6A’s Edmond North in-game three on day one of the four-day event. The Jays improve to 20-8 on the season.

Guthrie is now 3-3 against 6A opponents with another bigger opponent next in the Westmoore Jaguars on Thursday (1:00). The Jags run-ruled El Reno in-game one with a 10-2 decision. The Guthrie-Westmoore winner is highly likely to meet Deer Creek in the finals on Saturday.

Sophomore Bryan Dutton picked up the win and is now 5-2 this year. Dutton pitched all seven innings and held the Huskies to just four hits, but more impressive allowed just five to reach base. He added two strike outs and did not allow a base on ball.

The Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead after their first at bat with the first five batters reaching base, including Scott Pickle, Landry Chappell, and Dutton collecting singles. Chappell and Dutton each collected a RBI in the frame.

Guthrie followed that with another run in the second when Jacob Chappell was hit by pitch and later stole second base. Luke Davis singled to move Chappell to third and was finally brought home on a sacrifice bunt by Pickle to give the Jays a 4-0 lead.

The scored remained 4-0 for the next two innings, but Guthrie struck one last time in the fifth. Hayden Seifert reached base on an error and was followed by a walk by Landry Chappell. Cody Reihs entered the game as a pinch runner for Seifert and the speedy Reihs scored on a Dutton single.

Edmond North, 6A’s 15th ranked team, falls to 14-15 on the season.
