After coming within a point of knocking off Carl Albert, Guthrie returns home Friday looking to turn that performance into its first district victory.
The Bluejays host Midwest City at Jelsma Stadium on Friday, Oct. 2, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
Guthrie enters the matchup at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Class 5A District 1 following last week’s 17-16 loss to Carl Albert. The Bluejays pushed the Titans to the finish before a late field goal allowed Carl Albert to escape with its 58th consecutive victory.
Friday gives Guthrie a chance to respond and get back into the win column as the district schedule continues.
The Bluejays have shown improvement since opening the season with losses to Tuttle and Elgin. Guthrie followed those setbacks with a 28-0 victory at Bethany and a 49-7 home win over Blanchard before taking Carl Albert to the wire.
For head coach Kelly Beeby’s team, the next challenge is carrying that progress into another district matchup. A victory would bring Guthrie back to .500 overall and even its district record at 1-1.
Midwest City brings a 2-2 record into Friday’s contest under head coach Jacques Washington. The Bombers and Bluejays compete in a district that also includes Carl Albert, Duncan, Durant, Lawton and Noble.
With five district games remaining, Guthrie has plenty of opportunities ahead to build its playoff position. That stretch begins Friday in front of the home crowd.
