The Guthrie boys basketball team will be looking for their first win of the 2012-13 season when they lace up the sneakers in the Duncan Chisholm Holiday Shoot-Out.

With three weeks into the season and having only played three games in ten days, the Jays will look to get into a routine with three games in three days.

Guthrie begins bracket play with Class 4A Elgin, who will also be looking for their first win of the year after starting off 0-8. Game time is set for 2:30 on Thursday.

The winner of the Jays and Owls will play the winner between U.S. Grant and Duncan at 5:30 on Friday. The losers of the two games meet at 11:30 a.m.

Westmoore and Elk City begin the boys tournament with an 11:30 Thursday morning and capping the opening night off will be Madill and Lawton MacArthur.

The boys will play in the Duncan Tournament for the first time after playing several years at the Ardmore Holiday Shoot-Out.

The 0-3 start for the Jays have come in conference play (El Reno, Piedmont and Shawnee) where they have allowed an average of 59 points per game while only scoring an average of 50 points.

Senior Jerrick Warren and L’liott Curry have been the scoring threats as expected. Warren combined to score 35 points in the first two games while Curry, a sophomore, scored a season high 21 points in the loss to Shawnee last week.

Head Coach Tim Flanigan, in his first season, did receive some good news when the OSSAA cleared Edgar Baez to play. Baez made his BlueJay debut, in Shawnee, and sparked the team with 10 points. The junior moved to Guthrie from Mexico and will benefit the offense.

Guthrie 76, Elgin 32

Head Coach Tim Flanigan picked up his first win at Guthrie in a big way in the first round of the Duncan Chisholm Holiday Shoot-Out Tournament.

Flanigan’s Jays jumped out to a 21-8 first quarter lead en route to a 76-32 blow-out win over Elgin.

Guthrie improves to 1-3 while Elgin falls to 0-9.

Leading the scoring ways was junior Edgar Baez with 18 points. Fellow junior Jeremy Brown finished with 11 and senior guard JT McFadden was the third BlueJay to finish with double-digit points with 10.

The Jays finished the game with 10 players scoring.

Up next, is tournament host Duncan, 5:30 on Friday, for the right to play in the championship game. Duncan (4-3) escaped U.S. Grant (0-4) 58-49.

Duncan stormed out of the halftime locker room and erupted for 22 points and at the same time held the BlueJays to just 9 points in the third quarter.

However, Guthrie held a one-point lead with a minute left in the game, but loss 47-44 as Edgar Baez’s three-point shot was no good at the buzzer.

Head Coach Tim Flanigan stressed that his team must work on consistency in different areas, including the free throw line. Guthrie missed four front ends of one-and-ones in the game.

The Jays will look to claim the third place trophy when they take on 6A’s Westmoore Jaguars at 5:30 on Saturday. Westmoore dropped their semifinal game to Lawton MacArthur, 60-59, in overtime after defeating Elk City on day one.

Coach Tim Flanigan was pleased with the intensity and effort of his Jays as they attempted a come back against 6A’s Westmoore Jaguars, but a 9-point second quarter deficit was to much to overcome.

After a tied first quarter, Westmoore outscored the Jays 16-7 in the second quarter and added a seven-point advantage to that heading into the fourth quarter.

The Jays outscored Westmoore, but not enough to overcome in the third place game.

Guthrie falls to 1-5 on the season.
