City announces start of Owen Field Sports Complex expansion project

The City of Guthrie has announced that construction will officially begin on June 19 for the long-anticipated Owen Field Sports Complex Expansion Project.

The project, which has been in planning and development for several years, is moving forward following final approvals and a competitive bidding process conducted under the Public Competitive Bidding Act. Bids were awarded during the May 19 City Council meeting.

Funding for the project includes support from the Land and Water Conservation Fund through a grant awarded via the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation. The expansion represents a major investment in recreational infrastructure for the community.

Construction is expected to take approximately 245 calendar days, with completion anticipated in February 2027, weather permitting.

“We are proud to partner with the City of Guthrie and the community on a facility that will serve student-athletes, families, and fans for generations,” said Aaron Stoops of Crossland Construction. “This project represents more than a new field—it is an investment in the future of Guthrie and the opportunities athletics create for young people.”

The project will include three new softball and baseball fields, an ADA-compliant concession and restroom facility, irrigation connections at each field, a new entryway from State Highway 33, and ADA-compliant parking serving all fields.

City officials say the project marks a major milestone for the community and reflects years of collaboration and planning.

“The start of construction marks an exciting milestone for Guthrie,” City Manager Eddie Faulkner said. “We are grateful to the Sports Field Task Committee, CIP Committee, and the past and current mayors and council members whose vision and dedication helped bring this project to life. This investment will benefit Guthrie families and athletes for generations to come.”
