City of Guthrie to end contract with Flock camera system in 2025

The City of Guthrie has announced that it will not renew its contract with the Flock Safety camera system in 2025.

Guthrie Police Chief of Police Don Sweger originally secured funding for the system through a Department of Justice grant in 2022, with the City Council giving unanimous approval for installation in 2023. However, with the expiration of the grant funding, the City of Guthrie would be responsible for future costs, leading to the decision to discontinue the service, according to City officials.

The cameras and system were a two-year contract that cost $61,722 and was funded with a grant from the National White Collar Crime Center. The City was under no obligation to continue the program.

During its operation, the Flock Safety system proved to be a valuable tool for the Guthrie Police Department. It helped gather objective evidence while protecting individual privacy rights and provided real-time alerts for vehicles flagged on a hot list, assisting in the capture of several wanted criminals.

A public transparency portal offering real-time statistics has been available throughout the program’s use.

The Flock system contributed to multiple significant arrests, including a hit-and-run suspect with a prior history of alcohol-related offenses and the capture of a wanted fugitive from Louisiana charged with sexual battery against a minor.

The Guthrie Police Department expressed gratitude for the success the system provided in solving crimes and remains committed to protecting and serving the community.
