County employees now have the option of open carry while at work

In a packed board room on Tuesday morning, Logan County elected officials voted unanimously to allow county employees to defend themselves while at work with open carry. Logan County becomes the first county in the state to adopt the policy.

Following a 60 minute discussion, County Commissioners Mike Pearson, Monty Piearcy and Marven Goodman, Court Clerk Rejenna Zmek, County Clerk Troy Cole, Treasurer Sherri Longnecker and Assessor Tisha Hampton voted yes to change the county’s policy. Sheriff Jim Bauman was the only elected official not in attendance for the meeting.

Employees, who have their conceal weapon permit, will soon be taking steps in protecting themselves while on the job and in county vehicles.

However, not all employees will be able to carry while at work.

State law prohibits open carry inside the Logan County Courthouse and the nearby Courthouse’s annex building where business is conducted with the public. Gun activists say they are currently working on legislation to allow carry in such buildings.

Guthrie News Page will have more details on the new policy, which will change the county’s employee handbook, when those documents are available.
