County to consider FEMA assistance following heavy rains

The Board of County Commissioners held one of their shortest meetings on Monday morning. The board approved a resolution in case emergency relief is needed from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) due to the recent heavy rains.

Emergency Manager David Ball told the commissioners the proclamation is in case damages exceed the amount, but says at the current time the county will not be able to claim enough damages to earn the assistance.

“We needed to do this in case there is stuff out there that I am not aware of,” Ball said

“It’s just a check in the box right now.”

According to Ball, the threshold dollar amount to be considered for FEMA is approximately $145,000 based off the census.

“If we think we have enough (damages) we can begin the process,” Ball told the commissioners.

Ball added the bridge on Seward Rd (west of Broadway) that suffered a heavy amount of damage is not covered by FEMA assistance due to the road being a major collector road.

In other action, District 1 Commissioner Marven Goodman abstained from voting on approving the minutes from the previous meeting (May 29). The motion passed 2-0.
