Cross Country team falling into a pattern

The Guthrie boys cross country team competed in their seventh event of the 2010 season at the Holland Hall Invitational this Saturday, and a clear pattern is starting to reveal itself.

Class 5A will be a three-team race for the state championship later this month: Bishop McGuinness, Deer Creek, and the Jays. All three schools have competed against each other in multiple events this season with the Irish coming away with all the team titles.

Another pattern that was expected this season and is holding to form is Deer Creek’s Taler Buck leading the pack. Buck has won multiple individual titles, including Guthrie’s Cottonwood Flats, in dominating fashion. He did the same in the Holland Hall run.

Yet another pattern taking shape is Jays junior runner Jonathan Ogan. Ogan has been a staple in the Top 5 in his races, including Saturday’s fifth place finish. Ogan has been the top runner for Guthrie all season with the exception of one race.

Buck won the Holland Hall run with a time of 16:28 with Ogan :25 behind him. McGuinness, as a team, finished second behind 6A’s Jenks. Deer Creek was third, Union was fourth, and Guthrie finished fifth.

The top five runner for the Jays were Ogan’s 16:58, Walker Cross (21st) 17:36, Zack Cates (24th) 17:40, Hunter Sallee (30th) 17:47, and Alex Dorio (82nd) 19:34. Other runners included Adam Beery 19:50, and Leroy Unruh 21:14.

The next race for the defending state champions will be the Birdville High Invitational, on Saturday, October 9th.
