It may have been a secret at the beginning of the 2011 cross country season, but Guthrie’s senior Walker Cross is proving he is going to be a force in 5A. Although, he did finish 11th overall in last years state meet.

Walker Cross is off to a quick start for the Jays this season.

Cross won his first event of the season by winning the Tulsa Edison Hugh Pierce Chandler Park Run last Saturday. In the process, he helped lead the Jays to their second straight win on the season.

Last week, Guthrie took top prize in the Weatherford Sand Plum two-mile run.

The Jays finished with 67 team points in Tulsa and was followed by Owasso’s 106 and Metro Christian’s 112 points.

Cross placed second in each of the first two races before Saturday’s event.

Cross narrowed out East Central’s Brock Artis by one second with a run of 16:51 in the three-mile jaunt.

To help secure the team win, fellow senior Jonathan Ogan finished third overall with a time of 16:54. Hunter Sallee, who missed last week’s Weatherford run, was the next BlueJay to cross at the 18:12 mark for 12th place.

Guthrie runners finish and times:

1 Walker Cross 16:51
3 Jonathan Ogan 16:54
12 Hunter Sallee 18:12
23 Taylor Self 18:50
28 Evan Watts 18:56
(73) Sean Harvey 20:33
(83) Brent Jenkins 21:37
