Downtown intersections turns into 4-way stops

City crews installed an additional two stop signs at downtown intersections on Wednesday in hopes of calming down the area.

Stop SignThe additional two stop signs were added to the intersection of Oklahoma Ave and Broad Street as well as Cleveland and Broad.

City Manager Sereniah Breland said the primary reason for the 4-way stops is for public safety.

The intersections is one of the primary routes that the fire station takes for emergency calls – both EMS and fire.

The intersections are also heavily traveled with Central Elementary and Guthrie Junior High.

Guthrie News Page was at the Oklahoma and Broad intersection on Thursday morning. Of the 20 vehicles traveling on Oklahoma, 16 obeyed the signs while four others failed to see the change.

A nearby business says the intersection was confusing for some motorists when traveling on Oklahoma Ave. and likes the addition of the signs.

The city is adding more stop signs to other current 2-way stops mainly in residential areas.

  1. This is great, but there are several intersections around town with no stop or yield signs either direction. Its just open intersections. I think this is great to put those in downtown, but why not first concern themselves with the open intersections first. Thats more of a safety issue in my opinion.
