OKLAHOMA CITY — Breyden Codding of the Guthrie FFA Chapter earned third-place honors in the 2016 Oklahoma FFA Agricultural Sales Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award area during the 90th Oklahoma FFA Convention on April 27.

Codding’s SAE involves buying sweet corn at a wholesale price and reselling it at a premium to local customers, he said.

“On a typical day, I will purchase about 100 bushels of sweet corn to sell the next day,” Codding said. “I have to work diligently to keep the business side of things running.”

Codding said his business and people skills have improved greatly because he has to interact with other individuals to market himself and his business.

The agricultural sales entrepreneurship proficiency award is designed to recognize students who are involved in a supervised agricultural experience related to the sale of feed, seed, fertilizer or agricultural chemicals. Students also may own businesses involving the sales of agricultural equipment, machinery or structures. Activities may include the merchandising of crops, livestock, processed agricultural commodities, horticultural or forestry items at either the retail or wholesale level.

The 17-year-old Guthrie FFA member is the son of Ryan and Sonya Codding. His agricultural education instructors and FFA advisers are Clay Drake, Marty Jones and Kylie Wooderson.

Codding plans to attend Oklahoma State University, double majoring in agribusiness and agricultural communications. Eventually, he would like to own a successful cattle operation.

This award is sponsored on the state level by the owners of Redgate Cattle Co., Max and Debra Redgate and John and Chancey Hanson, and Livingston Machinery. The national sponsor is Crop Production Services, and the sponsor for the $1,000 state winner scholarship is Choctaw County Fair Board.
