Guthrie police officer turns traffic criticism into viral laughter with clever Facebook post

What started as a citizen complaint on social media turned into a viral moment of humor and community connection, thanks to the quick wit of the Guthrie Police Department.

Over the weekend, a community member posted a photo of a Guthrie officer stationed along South Division Street, implying the officer was blocking traffic to “fish for tickets.” But the department saw the moment as an opportunity to show their sense of humor, and it paid off.

The very next day, the Guthrie Police Department shared a photo of the same officer, clearly visible in his patrol car, holding a small tree branch out the window while pointing a radar gun. The tongue-in-cheek caption read:

“Just out of fairness we wanted to warn you we have an undercover officer out today enforcing traffic laws. You probably won’t be able to see him, so make sure to wear your seatbelt, don’t text and drive, and watch your speed. You’ve been warned. We care about you, Guthrie!”

The playful post resonated with people far beyond Logan County. As of Monday afternoon, it had been viewed over eight million times, shared over 27,000 times, received nearly 9,000 comments, and amassed more than 227,000 likes—making it one of the most viral moments in Guthrie PD’s social media history.

Residents and commenters from across the country chimed in, praising the department’s lighthearted approach to safety and their ability to laugh with the community. Many thanked the department for making law enforcement feel more human and relatable.
