In a heartening continuation of a long-standing tradition, the Guthrie Public Schools Board of Education has renewed its agreements with Willow Creek Health Care, LLC and Golden Age Nursing Home to maintain Intergenerational Pre-K classrooms for the 2024-2025 school year.
This initiative, which has been described as a win-win situation for both the students and the elderly residents, marks its thirteenth year at Willow Creek and its seventh year at Golden Age.
The program, celebrated for its popularity and benefits to students, selects participants by lottery or through their parents’ employment with either the school district or the nursing home. About 20 prekindergarten students meet daily in permanent classrooms at the nursing home facilities, engaging in various activities with the elderly residents as part of this unique educational partnership.
This intergenerational early childhood education program offers mutual enrichment, allowing children and elderly residents to interact and participate in activities together. “It lifts my spirits,” one resident shared. “You can get down in the dumps in a nursing home… and I do. I have lots of nieces and nephews and they don’t come and visit me like these kids do.”
The program’s renewal underscores the ongoing success and positive impact it has had on both the young students and the elderly residents, fostering connections and creating a vibrant, supportive community.
