Guthrie says thank you to retiring fire chief Eric Harlow

Eric Harlow (left) is the third longest tenure at the Guthrie Fire Department as Fire Chief. Retiring City Manager Leroy Alsup (right) worked with Harlow for over six years.

City Hall was packed Friday afternoon as the City of Guthrie said thank you to retiring fire chief Eric Harlow.

Last month, Harlow announced his retirement following 23 years of fire service, including the past 12-plus as Guthrie’s chief.

“This decision was not made without many hours of deep thought and personal reflection. When I accepted this position over 12 years ago, I knew that it would not be without difficult decisions and endless work,” Harlow said. “I strongly feel that the city, county, and especially our department, is in much better condition that it was before my tenure.”

The room was filled with Harlow’s family, including his parents, city staff, fellow firefighters from across the county, community leaders, and of course cake, punch, and balloons.

Following a video presentation honoring the chief, retiring and former city manager Leroy Alsup spoke of Harlow’s many accomplishments not only for the fire department but also for the city, including updating the department’s fleet and securing many grants.

Alsup presented Harlow with a plaque thanking him for his dedicated service to Guthrie.

“I want to personally thank each employee for all they do for this great city, as well as the entire City Council and citizens of Guthrie for the support they have shown myself and our department over the years,” Harlow added.

Dane Lausen, who this week was promoted to fire chief, thanked Harlow for what he did for the department and his appreciation for allowing the firefighters to do their job without micro-managing.

“I’m excited to see him (Lausen) get into the role and get busy. I feel like I’m leaving things in great hands,” Harlow said.
