Guthrie sweeps Western Heights; Gilmore picks up first win

The Guthrie High School basketball programs showed off their brand new floor on Tuesday evening in fine fashion as both teams picked up wins. The Lady Jays had no issues in their win, but in the nightcap the Bluejays rallied from a 14-point deficit to collect their first win.

Just like a week ago, the Jays (1-1) offense started off sluggish in the first half, but found a rhythm in the fourth quarter and outscored Western Heights 23-10 to pick up a 55-51 victory. Guthrie managed 17 points in the first 16 minutes, but in the final 16 minutes poured in 38 much needed points.

First year head coach Russ Gilmore picks up his first win as the Bluejays head coach.

Senior Kevin Blue was one of those offensive sparks. The guard scored all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter, including 5-5 from the free throw line. Fellow senior guard J.D. Honeycutt finished with eight points, again, all coming in the second half.

David Sumo led all Guthrie scorers with 15 points and is averaging 13.2 points after two games.

Lady Jays off to good start

Guthrie went to a full-court press in the second quarter and proved to be the difference. The Lady Jays forced several backcourt turnovers which led to several easy buckets in the paint. In the quarter alone, Guthrie outscored the Lady Jets 22-4.

Western Heights continues to look for offense. In their first three games against ranked teams (Chickasha, El Reno and Guthrie), the Lady Jets are averaging just 24.6 points a game.

The Lady Jays were able to play their entire roster for the most part of the fourth quarter.

Senior Micayla Haynes scored 11 of her game high 17 points in the second quarter, including five field goals. In total, eight different Guthrie players scored a hoop.

Next up for both squads will be a home date with El Reno on Friday night.
