In one of their most competitive meets of the year, the Guthrie High School track teams had a significant performance from several of their distance runners.

Both the boys and girls 3200 meter relay team had a strong race by placing third. Distance coach James Strahorn said he was satisfied with both teams.

The girls team composed of Mercy Dement, Allie Guggisberg, Sierra Warner and Tori Wells continue to hold the third fastest time in 5A.

“They competed at a high level, and even though they didn’t have a team best time, I believe they will peak at the right time,” said Strahorn about the girls performance.

The boys team composed of Mason Barney, JD Coonfield, Loren Huskey and Trevor Sallee ran an 8:15:47 for their fastest time in the last few years, which ranks them above any other 5A school.

Strahorn believes there is still some work to be done.

“We’ve had discussions with the team that we can’t let the fact that we are heavy favorites get into our head.  We have to keep working hard.”

With four weeks remaining before the state meet, the Bluejays showed some pretty solid individual performances.

Juniors Trevor Sallee (second) and JD Coonfield (fifth) ran a great race in the 800 meters. Even though it was Sallee’s first open 800 meter race of the season, he felt very confident coming into it.

“I knew I was in contention coming into the race.” Said Sallee.

He took the lead with 400 meters and held it until the last 50 meters before he was passed by Norman’s Josh Camp. Sallee ran a 1:58:93 which is not only a new Pr for him, but is currently the second best time in 5A.

Tori Wells came with another strong race and finished 8th out of 53 runners in the mile. She ran her fastest time of the season and also met her personal best.

“I am still getting better, and I think by the time I get to state I’ll be where I want to be,” added Wells.

Strahorn will be taking his 3200 meter relay teams to the University of Kansas to compete at the Distance Medley Relay (DMR).

“It’s something we haven’t had the opportunity to do,”said Strahorn. “The kids are really looking forward to that.”
