High winds likely the cause for structure fire

The high winds that came rolling in on Sunday evening may have been the cause of a detached garage to go up in flames on Guthrie’s south side.

The Guthrie Fire Department responded to a home at the intersection of Lakewood and Sooner roads at 9:43 p.m. for a structure fire. As crews arrived, the garage was fully involved.

Home owners were able to remove nearby vehicles that were in immediate danger of the flames. The high winds were dangerously pushing the smoke and flames to the nearby home.

The Oak Cliff Fire Department was called in to assist to fight the fire. Crews were at a disadvantage with no fire hydrants in the area. Firefighters were alternating water from their tankers and engines and were filling the tankers from a hydrant near the Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport.

The Guthrie Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s Office shut down Sooner Road to allow full access for the firefighters.

The cause of the fire may have been sparked from a down power line, which is believed to have been blown over with the winds.

Fire crews remained on the scene until shortly after midnight.
