Shortly before noon on Sunday, the fire department responded to 216 E. Springer. Fire officials say no one was inside the home at the time of the blaze, but later found out there were pets inside.

The Guthrie Police Department shut down access of Springer St. from Division St and also from Broad St. to allow firefighters to work.

Smoke and flames were noticeable on the west side of the one-story structure just two houses east of Squires Field. The fire appeared to have started near the front of the home then it quickly spread to the attic.

Firefighters were forced to cut a portion of the roof for ventilation purposes. The method is used to keep the fire contained to the section of the home. Battalion Chief Rob Bukofzer says his team did a good job of not allowing the fire to spread to the east side of the home and protecting some of the belongings.

Once inside the home, firefighters found multiple dogs. Three dogs did not survive and one was unable to be located. However, one dog was saved after Firefighter Dane Lausen saw him hiding behind a wall. The firefighter took the small dog outside and provided oxygen with a specialized pet oxygen mask for the animal. The specialized item was obtained through the fire department for these type of scenarios.

Guthrie Animal Control was called to the home as was as utility companies, who turned off electricity and gas to the home.

The fire department needed about 60 minutes to get the fire under control and remained on the scene until 1:30 p.m.
