Jays take first game from Jets

Fresh off of four wins in three days and claiming an Ardmore Spring Break Tournament championship, the BlueJay baseball squad jumped back into conference play at the friendly confines of Squires Field Monday afternoon.

Guthrie hosted Western Heights and for the fifth straight game the Jays did not play a full 7-inning game as they run-ruled the Jets 14-2 in five innings to improve to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Bryan Dutton continues his solid play to begin the season as he collected his second win on the mound in as many starts and added a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, including his fifth home run this season.

In total, eight different Jays collected hits for a total of 14. Guthrie has now scored in double digits in six of their last seven games and have averaged 13 hits per game during the current seven game win streak.

Western Heights, however, struck first with 2 unearned runs to start the game, but only to see Guthrie respond with seven runs of their own in the first inning.

Dutton, who has taken over the lead off spot in the line-up, took a 1-1 pitch over the wall to put the Jays on the board. The next six batters would also reach base, including back-to-back singles by Scott Pickle and Hayden Seifert. Seifert’s hit tied the game at 2-all when Pickle crossed the plate. After John Clark was hit-by-pitch and Dusty Cotton singled, Cody Reihs plated them both when he crushed a 2-run triple to give the home team a 5-2 lead. Reihs later scored on a wild pitch. With 2-outs, freshmen short stop Jacob Chappell tripled and Pickle delivered a double to give the Jays a 7-2 advantage.

In the second inning, Guthrie collected three hits from Donovan Jordan, Dutton, and Seifert. Jordan’s single plated Cotton and Reihs, who reached base on Jets miscues’. In total, Heights allowed four base-on-balls and an error. Seifert’s RBI single gave his team a 12-2 advantage.

Dutton struck again with a RBI single as did Seifert who singled in Chappell, who was hit by pitch, to increase the Jays lead to 14-2 after three complete.

The same two teams will meet again Tuesday afternoon, at 4:30, when the Jays hit the road.
