The Ada Cougars presented the biggest challenge for the Guthrie baseball team over a three-day span of the Ardmore Spring Break Tournament. However, the Jays needed just six innings to claim the tournament championship.

Guthrie won their sixth straight game with an 11-3 win with nine different BlueJays collecting at least one hit. The Jays defeated Santa Fe South (24-0), Latta (14-3), Madill (13-0), and Ada (11-3) for the title.

Leading the offensive charge was Bryan Dutton, who collected three hits and four RBIs. The four RBIs came on one crack of the bat with a grand slam in the first inning when he took the 1-0 pitch over the wall. Dutton started the inning with a single and was followed by Scott Pickle, Hayden Seiftert, and Landry Chappell also collecting hits with singles. Kasey Gates and Jacob Chappell assisted with singles as well as Guthrie erupted for 8-runs in the first inning to set the tone.

Ada pulled a run across in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning only to see Guthrie respond with three more runs in the sixth. Junior outfielder John Clark doubled home Landry Chappell and both Clark and freshmen outfielder Donovan Jordan scored on wild pitches.

Seifert collected his first win of the season on the mound with four complete innings. He collected four punch outs while allowing just two base-on-balls. Kasey Gates came in for the last two innings in relief.

As a team, the Jays out scored their four opponents 62-6 and out hit their opponents 52-14.

The BlueJays will prepare for a busy week with five games in six days with four of those at Squires Field, including Deer Creek and Chandler, who both qualified for state tournaments last season. In fact, Deer Creek has made the last four 5A state tourney’s .

The first game of the week will come Monday when Western Heights travels to Guthrie for a 4;30 first pitch.

  1. Chris,

Just FYI…. Kasey Gates is spelled with a “K”. Since you are going to be typing it out a lot over the next few years, I thought I’d point that out. 🙂

    Kasey’s favorite Aunt…

  2. Thank you Kasey’s favorite Aunt. I have updated all the stories with the proper spelling. I should have known the Gates family would have used a “K” (strike out)instead of a C.

    • In honor of Casey Stengel… but, yes the “K” for strike out… Randy named all 3 boys after the sports he loves!!!
