As the growing season approaches, the Logan County Extension Office is encouraging residents to take advantage of soil testing services to help ensure healthy lawns, gardens, and crops. Proper soil sampling is essential for accurate test results, and the Extension Office has outlined a few key steps to help residents collect and submit their samples correctly.
When collecting a soil sample, individuals should gather between 15 to 20 soil cores from various locations throughout their field, yard, or garden. A soil probe is available for checkout at the Logan County Extension Office to make the process easier. All soil cores should be placed in a plastic bucket to avoid any contamination that could be caused by metal containers. After the soil is collected, the cores should be thoroughly mixed together.
Once the soil is mixed, a portion should be transferred to a quart-sized plastic bag. It’s important not to seal the bag, as sealing it can affect the accuracy of the test results. The sample bag should be clearly labeled with the corresponding field information, including crop type and yield goal, if applicable.
Completed samples can be dropped off at the Logan County Extension Office, located at 215 Fairgrounds Road, Suite B, in Guthrie. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Payment can be made in cash or by check, payable to “Logan County Extension.”
