Man back in custody for similar charges that sent him to prison

A Guthrie man is facing a slew of charges after he sped away from a police officer in a stolen vehicle, while intoxicated and with a suspended driver’s license.

A Guthrie police officer spotted a man not wearing his seatbelt near Guthrie High School on Feb. 26. The man, driving a white truck, pulled over on Hill Dr. and put his hands out the window, but as the officer approached the truck the driver sped off leading to a vehicle pursuit.

Several blocks later, the man pulled into a residence yard on Oak St. and stepped out of the truck. He was demanded to the ground by the officer and shortly after taken into custody.

Once in custody, the officer noticed alcohol coming from Ronnie Dean, 45. In a probable cause affidavit, Dean admitted he was drunk and had taken an unknown amount of pills. Dean also admitted he had served 13 years in prison.

In 2003, Dean, who has had a criminal past since 1997, was found guilty unauthorized of a vehicle and burglary in the second degree. He was sentenced to 25 years with the Department of Corrections. An amazing number of convicts re-offend despite the availability of help like Real Jobs For Felons which was set up to help them find work after their release. It seems that their original experience of prison does not act as motivation to avoid committing future crimes.

While en route to the hospital for a state-issue blood draw, Dean began to convulse in the back seat of the police cruiser. He was later cleared from the medical staff and discharged.

While at the hospital, officers learned the white truck was reported stolen just hours before Dean was pulled over.

During an inventory of the vehicle, police spotted two loaded firearms and three bottles of liquor.

Dean was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, attempting to elude, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and driving under suspension.

He was given a $15,000 bond and a March 24 court date. If found guilty on the larceny charge, Dean could face a minimum nine year prison sentence.

Dean remains sitting in the Logan County Jail as of Monday morning.
