Man found with drugs inside jail; concealed in rectum

After being taken into custody and transported to the city jail and later a county jail, a man was found concealing marijuana in his rectum.

The Guthrie Police Department responded to the 800 block of N. Pine involving a domestic case on Feb. 18 just after 8:30 p.m. While observing the area, officers found a man matching the description of their suspect walking into an apartment.

After several questions and an identification card proved the man was not the suspect officers were searching for. However, it turns out the once thought suspect had two municipal warrants for his arrest. After a short standoff, officers placed 35-year-old Derek Alan Schopplein into handcuffs.

In an affidavit, officers said they found a crystalline substance in Schopplein’s pocket, which later tested positive for methamphetamine. While walking to the officer’s vehicle, Schopplein, who was not cooperating, reportedly said the officer planted the meth on him.

Once they arrived to the police station, an officer said he could smell marijuana coming from the back seat and asked Schopplein if he had any additional contraband before entering the jail, which he replied with “yes” and that it was down his pants. Unable to locate the drugs, Schopplein asked to sit down to retrieve the marijuana. He was taken into a cell where he removed the drugs from his rectum.

As Schopplein, who has a pending felony drug charge, was being escorted to the county jail, officers noticed three buds of marijuana on the cell floor. Once inside the Logan County Jail, corrections officers found additional buds of marijuana in Schopplein’s rectum.

On Tuesday, Schopplein was charged with unlawful possession of controlled substance in presence of a minor under 21 years old and bringing controlled dangerous substance into jail. He was given a $10,000 bond and given a March 24 court date.

In March 2015, Schopplein pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence and having a suspended license. Schopplein drove a vehicle into a building on Guthrie’s west side, along with taking out a street sign and a fire hydrant. He was sentenced two years in the Department of Corrections and one year in the county jail. Related story: Man runs into sign, fire hydrant and building
