Man in custody after firing shots at Guthrie police officers

Updated on June 2, 2025, at 9:45 p.m. — A Guthrie man is in custody after allegedly opening fire on police officers who were responding to a welfare check at his home Monday evening.

Just before 6:30 p.m., officers with the Guthrie Police Department were dispatched to a home in the 1600 block of West Oklahoma Avenue after concerns were raised about the welfare of a resident. When the first officer arrived, he reported hearing screaming and the sound of glass breaking coming from inside the house.

A second officer soon joined, and the pair approached the front door, announced themselves, and knocked. Almost immediately, several gunshots were heard from within the residence. Concerned that someone inside may have been injured or in danger, officers forced entry by kicking in the front door.

As the door opened, the officers were met with gunfire. One of the rounds struck the door they had just breached, prompting them to retreat for safety and take cover.

Officers began issuing commands to the person inside. Shortly after, a man exited the front door unarmed but did not comply with commands to lie on the ground. Fearing he might retreat into the home where the firearm was believed to be located, an officer deployed a less-lethal bean bag shotgun, striking the man twice.

The suspect, identified as 69-year-old Jody Goad, fell to the ground and was taken into custody without further incident.

No officers were injured in the confrontation. Detectives remained on scene into the night to collect evidence and begin the investigation into the shooting.

Police say charges against Goad will be forwarded to the Logan County District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.
