After a verbal argument on Interstate 35, a Texas woman allegedly told her daughter to get out the vehicle. The teen was found walking on the interstate by a Logan County deputy.
The incident occurred on May 11 just before 1:30 p.m. when the deputy found the 15-year-old female walking alone near Seward Road.
The deputy made contact with the juvenile, who informed him that she was told to exit her mother’s vehicle after a verbal argument. The mother, Renee Qualls, then drove away and continued north on I-35.
The juvenile, Qualls and a second 12-year-old male were traveling from Texas to Kansas City, Missouri.
The juvenile reported that she had been on the highway for at least an hour, her mother was intoxicated and she believed her mother was still drinking alcohol before and after leaving her on I-35.
The juvenile was transported to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) was contacted. DHS staff and deputies made contact with Qualls who told investigators that she was still driving and possibly in Kansas.
Investigators believe based on Qualls’ slurred speech and incoherent thought that she was intoxicated when they spoke to her. Qualls refused to stop anywhere and report her location to law enforcement.
The juvenile was placed into the State’s custody. In addition, a verbal order was issued for the outstanding 12-year-old in Qualls’ vehicle to be taken into custody.
Investigators issued alerts across the states of Oklahoma and Kansas for Qualls and a warrant for her arrest.
On Monday, the 12-year-old juvenile was turned over to the State of Oklahoma and Qualls was turned into the Logan County Sheriff’s Office by her legal representation.
Her bond was reduced from $100,000 to $50,000.
The children in this matter have been returned to the custody of their father.
Qualls, who as of Monday afternoon, was in the county jail.
