Multiple animals lost in house fire

A house fire broke out Wednesday morning near downtown.

The Guthrie Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 400 block of S. 2nd Street with two people trapped inside at 9 a.m.

The fire crew, who responded from a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 33, entered the smoke-filled home and rescued two people from the upstairs.

Firefighters, who were assisted by Oak Cliff and Crescent fire departments, worked quickly to extinguish the flames with water and also by knocking out the home’s windows. Within minutes the fire was under control.

Soon after, firefighters could be seen removing multiple cats and dogs from the residence and into the yard. From there the animals were given CPR and oxygen by firefighters, a police officer, and an animal control officer.

Three cats did not survive and a dog was taken to an animal hospital by an animal control officer. Another dog was able to get out, while another was found by firefighters and was able to breathe on its own. However, oxygen was made available for the dog.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known at the scene and is under investigation.

All crews were back in service at 11 a.m.
