Police officers honored for their heroics at apartment fire

The Red Cross honored heroes from around Oklahoma on Thursday night, including three Guthrie police officers.

The Red Cross recognized a group of people for their volunteer work and responding to tragedies on Thursday night inside the GE Oil & Gas Center in Oklahoma City.

Sgt. Michael LaNoy, Officer Derek Speckman and Officer Michael Schmit were the first to arrive to the Woodpark Apartments fire on Dec. 3, 2018.

The officers arrived within two minutes of the initial call and began to evacuate residents from their apartments. They encountered a family in a second floor apartment on the southeast corner of the building, assisting a 40-year-old female and 18-year-old female from the second story window.

Sadly, a 14-year-old was killed inside, but the officers are credited with saving several other lives by going inside the burning apartments and helping everyone out. Related article and video: Update: Fatal apartment fire claims 14 year old

“Officer Speckman and Officer Schmit went into several apartments on the back side that were on fire,” Sgt. Lanoy said inside the GE Center.

The officers were three of six people recognized by the Red Cross.

The Red Cross will host a Heroes Breakfast to celebrate the heroes will be held March 5 at the Embassy Suites Downtown in Oklahoma City.
